Fire dogs search for ‘anything suspicious’ at Sandown care home

Adorable Hampshire Fire Dogs have been sent to investigate a fire at a disused care home.

Two dogs, Harvey and Ruby, have been shipped over from the mainland to assist firefighters with their investigation into a fire that started on Wednesday (July 25) at around 10.20pm.

The former Stonehaven care home on Carter Street saw fire crews extinguish a blaze from inside the building.

A spokesman for Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said: “They are just looking for accelerants or anything suspicious inside the building.”

One resident, Darren Carew, said no flames were visible from the structure “just smoke”.

Mr Carew added that firefighters blocked the roads, preventing anyone from driving close to the care home.

Hampshire Constabulary have been asked for clarification on whether or not the incident is being treated as suspicious.
