Dahlia expert’s season was bloomin’ wonderful

West Wight flower expert, Darren Everest, has been enjoying a blooming wonderful show season with his prize-winning dahlias.

He began his award-winning run by taking his 10th consecutive Gold Medal award at the Edenbridge and Oxted Agricultural Show in Surrey over the August Bank Holiday. He also took the Best Exhibit in the Open Dahlia Classes with his four vase class entry.

Over the following weeks, he also won several other awards, most notably his two championship class wins at the National Dahlia Show (NDS) at RHS Wisley Gardens.

Darren, from Cranmore, won the Don Brawn Trophy for three vases of miniature decorative dahlias and the Jack Kinns Trophy for three vases of waterlily dahlias. He also won the NDS Silver medal for best vase of waterlily dahlias and the bronze medal for the second-best vase.
Darren then went on to win the Miniature Championship class at the Surrey C&D Society show followed by the championship class at the Kent Federation Show in Ditton, mid-Kent. Finally, he concluded his season with a display at Lullingstone Castle as part of their Mexican weekend.

Over the next few weeks Darren will be busy as he is doing a talk entitled ‘Growing and Showing through Covid’ for the Newchurch Horticultural Society, at Newchurch Pavilion on Monday, (Oct 11) at 7pm. The following Monday (Oct 18), he will be giving a dahlia talk for St Helens Horticultural Society from 7.30pm.
