Cowes resident Beryl’s 100th birthday celebrations

A resident at a Cowes care home celebrated her 100th birthday with a special party and her favourite cake.

Beryl moved to the Island 92 years ago from Southampton before settling in Cowes. She worked in County Hall as a secretary for the clerk’s department.

Beryl married twice; her first husband was Robbie Shaw, and her second was Bob Allen. She had no siblings and no children, although her step daughters, Kate and Sue, are very important to her and visit her often. Beryl liked to travel and visited New Zealand, South Africa and the USA, and used to paint using oils but failing eyesight has put a stop to that.

She still enjoys a glass of wine every day and says that she has lived a very rich and fulfilled life with lots of wonderful experiences.

On the day, Beryl was thrilled to receive her card from the King and Queen and showed it to everyone in the home with pride. She celebrated by having lunch with a friend, after which her family visited and helped her open her cards and presents.

Residents all wore party hats, and the dining room and her bedroom were decorated with banners and balloons, where she was treated to her favourite lemon drizzle cake.

The Boogie Woogie Sisters provided entertainment in the afternoon with everyone singing along.

Beryl said: “It was such a special day; I wish that I could have it all over again. I can’t pick out a favourite bit, it was all wonderful.”
