Cowes Harbour Commission (CHC) has unveiled a partnership with the Corporation of Trinity House, to launch a fully sponsored Merchant Navy cadetship. This initiative offers a life-changing opportunity for one young person from the Cowes or East Cowes area to begin an internationally recognised maritime career.

CHC has long championed careers at sea, and this collaboration marks a new milestone in its efforts. With Trinity House managing the cadetship through its Merchant Navy Scholarship Scheme, the programme features fully-funded training at an approved UK nautical college, hands-on placement aboard various vessels, and pathways to globally recognised qualifications, such as the Officer of the Watch Certificate.

The successful applicant will be provided with a bursary throughout the three-year course and gain career guidance and networking opportunities as a recognised Yeoman of Trinity House. By removing financial barriers, the cadetship seeks to provide access to those who may not have otherwise had the resources to pursue such an opportunity.

“This fantastic cadetship represents an important step in supporting the next generation of maritime professionals,” said Gary Hall, CEO of CHC. “By giving a young person in our community the chance to build essential skills and gain invaluable experience, we can help them move towards a highly rewarding career at sea.”

Applications open soon, targeting candidates, aged 18 by September 2025, who meet academic and residency requirements. For updates and more details, visit CHC’s website or follow their social media channels.
