Cowes drive-thru attracts opposition

A scheme for a new McDonald’s Drive-Thru restaurant has been submitted to the Isle of Wight Council. The proposal, prepared by agents Planware, sets out plans for a new branch with car parking, landscaping and associated works, including Customer Order Displays, on land next to Esplanade Garage on Three Gates Road in Cowes.

According to the submission, the development would represent a multi‑million‑pound investment and could create more than 120 full and part‑time jobs, which the company intends to recruit locally.

The application has attracted early opposition, with a petition launched earlier this year gathering more than 1,400 signatures. Concerns raised by residents centre on increased traffic, noise, lighting and the potential impact on the surrounding area. Some argue that congestion on Three Gates Road is already an issue and fear a Drive Thru could worsen safety and environmental conditions.

Planware said pre‑application advice had been sought from the council, with meetings and written guidance received in September 2025. Two rounds of public consultation – one virtual and one in person – were also held, which the agents say helped shape the final proposal.

The design is described as using natural and neutral materials, with the layout intended to sit appropriately within its setting. Planware also states that sufficient parking would be provided, including accessible bays close to the entrance.
