A new memorial to those who lost their lives during the Covid pandemic has been unveiled by former council leader and Mayor of Cowes, Cllr Lora Peacey-Wilcox, assisted by fellow town councillors Phil Sanders and Michael Paler.

The idea of the memorial was suggested by Cllr Peacey-Wilcox during her term of office as Mayor from 2019 to 2021 and was supported by members of Cowes Town Council.

The inscribed granite memorial stone, produced by Wight Stonemasonry, is located in the rosebed near the Park Road entrance to Northwood Park. The location was chosen to be visible to passers-by, whilst also providing a quiet place to sit and reflect. It is accompanied by an oak plaque also commissioned by the town council, crafted by local company, Dovetailed Design.

Cllr Peacey-Wilcox said: “I felt it was important to remember so many lives lost to us here in Cowes during that time. It was heart-breaking in the extreme with what families were going through. But out of the depths of despair and sorrow comes hope and new life.

“I thank all who supported my request at Cowes Town Council to allow this memorial to be commissioned.”

Cllr Peacey-Wilcox’s granddaughter, Blanche, was born during the Covid pandemic.
