Councillors to receive progress report on potential committee-style governance

By Press Release Mar 20, 2024

Isle of Wight councillors are set to receive a progress report on the possibility of switching to a new committee-style governance with the work on the potential to move from a leader and cabinet model to a committee system continuing.

Full Council will tonight (Wednesday) hear more about what needs to happen in advance of councillors being able to make any decision on a change of governance. The meeting starts at 6pm and residents can watch it live on the council’s website  (Agenda item 10).

If the council is to change to a committee system, the current proposals suggest there will be a policy, finance and resources committee, and four service committees covering:

  • children’s services;
  • adult social care, public health, and housing;
  • economy, regeneration, transport, and infrastructure;
  • environment and community protection.

Other committees currently operating would remain unchanged.

After tonight’s meeting a detailed report will be brought before an extraordinary Full Council meeting in May so that members can consider making a formal resolution to proceed with the changes.

The council would welcome people’s views on the proposed changes — please email future.governance@iow.gov.uk or write to Future Governance, Isle of Wight Council, County Hall, High Street, Newport PO30 1UD.
