Consultation begins on A3056 Blackwater-Lake safety improvements

By Press Release Mar 1, 2024

Last year Isle of Wight Council was awarded £2.1m from the Department for Transport’s Safer Roads Fund for major safety improvements to one of the Island’s busiest roads, the A3056 between Blackwater and Lake.

Proposals relating to the award have now been revealed in a consultation starting today.  The draft Traffic Regulation Orders include variable speed limits near to Primary Schools in Arreton and Lake at times when children will be arriving and leaving. Other proposed changes along the route include 40mph limits on short stretches of the road where there are significant concerns over the number and severity of accidents.

At the time of the original announcement last April, Councillor Phil Jordan, Cabinet member for highways and infrastructure and now Council Leader said: “The intention of the scheme is to reduce identified high-risk areas and to improve the overall safety of the route for all public highway users.

“Any targeted funding for areas where there are proven road safety concerns is very much welcomed by me. This is a significant amount of money, which will be important in terms of improvements to the A3056 and particularly for road safety.

“We will continue to work closely with local communities and parish councils to deliver these safety measures as efficiently and effectively as possible.”

The consultation lasts until March 29 and details can be found on the Council’s Traffic Regulation Order Consultation page.
