Brighstone & District Horticultural Show flower show was a massive hit

A revamped Brighstone & District Horticultural Show took place at the Wilberforce Hall and Scout Hut on Saturday.

There were 350 entries from 69 entrants, well above the committee’s expectations and also up on last year’s Spring Show entry.

Classes included flower, pot plant, vegetable, floral art, cookery, beverage, photography, handicraft and children.

With a view to freshening things up and sparking more interest, the committee had spent time over the winter revamping the schedule with a lot of new classes, particularly in cookery. These included bara brith – a traditional Welsh fruit loaf made with tea, vegan traybake, and floral art, where the two interpretative exhibit classes: ‘Desert Island Discs’ and ‘Eggstravaganza’ resulted in some very creative and interesting entries.

The committee thanked the volunteers, exhibitors and visitors who made the show such a success.

Top results: Best in Show and Handicraft Cup – Pat Wilson for a quilt entered in the Any Other Handicraft class, Narcissi Bowl – best daffodil: Darren Everest, Centenary Cup for most points in horticulture – Darren Everest, Floral Art Cup – Sue Cox, for her ‘Desert Island Discs’ exhibit, June Butler Cup for best exhibit in class 47 (Chocolate Easter Cake) – Mary Snow, Cookery Cup – Margaret McLaughlin, Wine Salver – Mike Roberts, Society Shield for best photograph – Steve Newberry, Children’s Cup – Holly Price for her painted pebble with a Spring theme.
