Braving the cold on Boxing Day

By Chris Cornford Jan 3, 2021

The Ventnor Boxing Day charity swim usually attracts well over 1,000 supporters who flock to the seafront to cheer on the brave souls taking to the water. The event raises funds for the Lifeboat, Ventnor Carnival and PATCH, People’s Approach to Cancer Help, which supports Ventnor area residents with a cancer diagnosis.

This year would have been the 40th anniversary of the organised swim, but it had to be cancelled due to Covid restrictions. However at the traditional start time of midday there were still three adventurous swimmers taking a dip in the chilly waters. Our cameraman, Chris, was there to record their fortitude, but resisted all enticements to get into the water himself. Shame – that would have made a great picture!
