Bouyant bowlers batter batters in cricket this week

Shanklin bowling attack limit Bashley at Westhill

The return of cricket to Brading, Shanklin and Godshill’s last-over win, and Ash Goldsmith’s 6-wicket haul, were highlights of a weekend still rain-affected at Ryde, Smallbrook and other Island grounds, with bowlers benefitting from the conditions.

Hampshire Leagues

In Southern Premier Division One, Ventnor lost by 50 runs at Old Tauntonians. The Islanders limited the home side to 189 all out, with Will Mew and Charlie Calloway taking 2 wickets each. In reply, Dineth Thimodya’s 78 was not enough for Ventnor to get a foothold in the match, and they were all out for 139 in the 42nd over.

In Division Three, Shanklin & Godshill won by 4 wickets at home to Bashley, with Shanklin’s Jack White taking 4-33 to limit the visitors to 212-9. In reply, 59 from Olly Niemiec, and 33 from skipper, Ben White, helped the Island side win by 213-6 with 3 balls to spare.

Division Four South leaders, Ryde II XI won by 140 runs away at Fair Oak, with Ash Goldsmith (48), Ben Gregory (39), George Griffith (29 N.O.), Ian Hailes (26) and opener, Simon Berendt (25), helping Ryde reach 215-5 off 40 overs. Ash Goldsmith delivered 6-8 helping to keep Fair Oak to 75 all out in the 35th over.

Island Leagues

In Division One, playing at Brading, Ventnor III beat St Helens by 5 wickets, with Rafe Hawkins taking 3-8 restricting St Helens to 125 all out off 32 overs. In reply, Charlie Turpin’s unbeaten 50, with 29 from Michael Compton, saw Ventnor reach their target losing only 5 wickets.

Northwood won by 238 runs at home to Shanklin & Godshill II XI, batting first ’Wood scored 308-6, with Chris Williams hitting 76 and John Jones 69, both losing their wicket to Edward Bartram. Shanklin replied with Steve Priddle knocking 34 and Edward Bartram 22, before being bowled out for 70 in the 29th over, with Gary Cooper taking 4-19 and Simon Goldsmith 3-13.

In Division Two, Newport II XI won by 56 runs at home to Northwood II XI, scoring 145-8 off 35 overs, with skipper, Steven Steinmetz, top scoring with 36, and Nick Stafford taking 3-31. Northwood’s skipper/wickie/opener, Martyn Richards. Replied by hitting 34 to help his side reach 89-9, with Aaron Hartup taking 3-3 and Alfie Pease taking 3-23.


Tomorrow (Saturday), Ventnor welcome Andover, Ryde travel to East Woodhay, Shanklin & Godshill visit Southampton Community Club, Ventnor II XI travel to Bedhampton Mariners and Ryde II XI welcome Hambledon.

IW Division One leaders, Newport, welcome Northwood, Shanklin & Godshill II play Ventnor III, and St Helens entertain Freshwater, In Division Two, Ventnor IV host leaders Newport II.
