Age UK Isle of Wight is calling on knitters, crocheters and community groups across the Island to help create 20,000 miniature hats as part of the popular innocent Big Knit campaign.
The charity hopes the colourful creations will raise £6,000 to support services for older people on the Isle of Wight. Just two weeks after the campaign launched, more than 2,000 hats have already been collected, putting the charity more than 10 per cent of the way towards its ambitious target.
The appeal follows a record-breaking effort last year, when supporters produced 18,794 hats, far exceeding the original target of 12,500.
The Big Knit is a long-running partnership between Innocent Drinks and Age UK. Every smoothie sold wearing one of the handmade woolly hats generates a 30p donation, with hats submitted through Age UK Isle of Wight helping to fund local services.
Money raised will support initiatives including Chatty Brews, which tackle loneliness by bringing people together for conversation and companionship, as well as the charity’s Information and Signposting service and Digital Drop-ins, where older residents can receive help with phones, tablets and other technology.
Joe Hodgkinson, Marketing and Digital Communications Officer at Age UK Isle of Wight, said the charity was hoping to build on the success of previous years.
He said: “Island knitters gave us a wonderful response last time, and we’d love to build on that together. Whether you make one hat or get a whole group involved, every contribution towards our target is welcome.”
Free knitting and crochet patterns are available via iw.observer/big-knit and are for all abilities, with beginners encouraged to take part. Families, schools, workplaces and community groups can also get involved.
Completed hats can be delivered or posted to Age UK Isle of Wight, 17 St Thomas’ Square, Newport. Hats are being collected now, A local hand-in deadline will be announced ahead of the national deadline of 1 October 2027. The tiny hats will appear on smoothie bottles in early 2028.
