Beetle jump wins Nick top prize

An Isle of Wight beetle launching itself through the air at Thorness Bay has led to success for retired engineer and Cowes resident Nick Edwards in the Royal Society of Biology (RSB) Photography Competition.

Nick was named as Photographer of the Year 2019 for his stunning photo, which he titled ‘Demob Happy’ and he also wins £1,000 in prize money.

The theme of the competition was ‘Capturing movement’ and Nick was up against very stiff competition with more than 2,500 photos submitted by over 900 entrants worldwide.

Sixty-six year old Nick who is a keen volunteer for the RNLI lifeboat thanked the RSB for the award saying ‘I was very pleased to hear that I have won the competition, which was a lovely surprise. It feels very grand to be named as Photographer of the Year.”
