Arrest after Sandown ‘hit and run’ closed Newport Road in Lake

A hit and run that saw a road closed and victim hospitalised has resulted in arrest. 

The crash in Newport Road, Lake, at around 6pm on Thursday (July 26) involved a Nissan Micra and a Nissan Almera.

The Almera “failed to stop” and drove away from the scene outside Sandown Airport, say police.

The driver of the Micra, a 33-year-old woman, was seriously injured and taken to hospital.

A spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary said: “We were called shortly before 6pm to reports of a two vehicle collision on Newport Road, Sandown, yesterday (July 26).

“Collision involved a Nissan Micra and a Nissan Almera.

“The Almera failed to stop at the scene.

“The driver of the Micra, a 33-year-old woman from Shanklin, suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital.

“A 35-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of driving offences and remains in custody at this time.”
