Nineteen Wight Tri members took part in the first event of the club’s summer series — the Totland Aquathon — on Friday, enjoying sunny conditions and a calm sea.
The athletes completed either a 250m (273 yds) or 500m (547 yds) swim followed by a 2.4km (1 1/2 miles) or 4.8km (3 miles) run to Colwell Bay and back. With a low tide forcing swimmers to wade out further than usual, the event got off to a lively start.
Fastest finishers over the full distance were Craig Wilson, who clocked 29m 22s after cycling from Newport, and Jan Fletcher in 32m 47s. Kaylee Gauntlett won the nominated time challenge, finishing just 19 seconds off her predicted 39m 20s. Four others also came within a minute of their targets.
With refreshments served by the pop-up café and rain holding off until the end, the event was a successful opener for the series. The next event is the Yaverland Aquabike on Friday, July 4.
