An night filled with Nutcracker magic

Crown Ballet will bring The Nutcracker to Shanklin Theatre, on Thursday, November 19, at 7.30pm, as part of Amande Concerts’ 20th‑anniversary UK touring season.

Set to Tchaikovsky’s much‑loved score, The Nutcracker follows Marie, as a wooden nutcracker doll, becomes the starting point for a magical journey through a snowy forest and into the Kingdom of Sweets. The ballet has been delighting audiences for 133 years, having premiered on December 18, 1892, at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg.

Beyond its famous storyline, The Nutcracker is celebrated for its distinctive orchestral writing and character dances, including the Waltz of the Snowflakes and it’s best‑known moment, the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. Tchaikovsky wrote the piece to showcase the celesta – a then‑new instrument whose bell‑like shimmer gives the music its instantly recognisable, magical sound. It has become a staple of winter concerts, films, and Christmas traditions worldwide.

The ballet’s festive atmosphere, colourful costumes, and accessible storytelling make it ideal for first‑time ballet‑goers, as well as long‑time fans. Crown Ballet’s international touring company brings together talented professional dancers from around the world, ensuring audiences can enjoy classical ballet without travelling far.

The 2026 tour marks 20 years of Amande Concerts presenting classical ballet nationwide, and The Nutcracker remains one of its most popular titles – a seasonal favourite that continues to enchant audiences of all ages.
