A record 400 pupils took part in the annual Yarmouth Pancake Races in drizzly conditions on Tuesday.
The children were ferried into the town from Freshwater & Yarmouth and Shalfleet Primary Schools, including the two pre-schools. As it is half-term next week the races were held a week early so the children could participate.
Despite some traffic problems with diversions, the chairman of Yarmouth Carnival Committee who organised the event, Jamie Allen, said: “It went fantastically well. All of the parents got to see their children take part and we absolutely want to see all the children back again next year.
“Getting both schools involved in a Carnival event is what it’s all about.”
The prestigious Shrove Tuesday Pancake Trophy for Clubs and Businesses, was won for the second successive year by Josh McGregor, from the River Yar Boatyard. He pipped Adrian Evans of The Wheatsheaf Inn, who was dressed in a lion’s costume, on the line, with Bindi Wanstall of PO41 third.
The Mallishag was Monty Aston with Miles Peckham acting as Master of Ceremonies and the town’s Mayor, Debbie McCleary attended.
The transport to take the pupils to and from the event was provided by Yarmouth Town Council and Yarmouth Trust.
