A primary school class is following in the footsteps of Captain Sir Tom Moore, who died earlier this month, by taking part in the 100 Mile Challenge.
Each Year 6 pupil at St Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Primary School, Carisbrooke, has been asked to record their running and walking over one week with the aim of reaching a total of 100 miles.
Year 6 teacher, Kate Bakewell, said: “The children approached me with the idea before the half-term holiday and we thought it was a lovely way to pay tribute to an inspirational man, as well as raising funds to support our hard-working NHS staff.”
Over the half-term week, the children clocked up the miles – despite the rain and wind – and, as a group, have walked and run a total of 245 miles. Some of the determined young walkers achieved more than 20 miles.
So far, their efforts have raised over £500 for NHS Charities Together via their JustGiving page: justgiving.com/fundraising/stocy6.
