Newport-based community radio station, Vectis Radio, has been granted a five-year extension on its broadcasting licence by Ofcom.
The station, which started life in 2010 as an internet-only broadcaster, was first granted its five-year FM licence by the regulator in November 2017. It has now been renewed for another five years enabling Vectis Radio to continue broadcasting on FM 104.6.
Station manager, Ian Mac, said, “This is fantastic news. In the last five years, we have not only continued broadcasting through the pandemic but gained some national awards as well as the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. We are going to build on those successes in the next five years and now we can plan for the future with renewed confidence and look forward to expanding our management team with some additional directors.”
Fellow director, Kelvin Currie, said, “I am overjoyed that we can continue broadcasting and supporting our local community, not only with our broadcasting but by helping youngsters through our 4Ps Training School charity. Giving young people a chance to broadcast on live FM radio gives them a big incentive to work on their communication and confidence skills.”
Leader of the Isle of Wight Council, Cllr. Lora Peacey-Wilcox said, “This licence extension is well deserved and I am always amazed by not only the breadth of music on offer, but how well the station supports the Island. Marvellous news, well done to all concerned.”
IW High Sheriff, Kay Marriott added, “It is very good news indeed, that Vectis Radio’s licence has been extended. The station can continue its great work supporting the Isle of Wight. The confidence shown by Ofcom in Vectis Radio is an accolade to the team and all their hard work.”
