A fatal accident occurred outside the Red Funnel ferry terminal in Southampton, resulting in the death of an employee.
The incident took place on Thursday morning (June 15), coinciding with the arrival of thousands of festival-goers crossing the Solent for the Isle of Wight Festival.
Police were summoned to the scene at around 5.45am, where a white HGV had collided with a set of traffic lights on Town Quay after emerging from the Red Funnel ferry terminal. Despite the best efforts of the public, Red Funnel staff and the emergency services, the 40-year-old driver from Bournemouth succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities are now urging any witnesses to come forward, particularly those who may possess relevant dashcam footage. If you have any information, you can submit a report on-line via the police’s website or contact them at 101, quoting reference 44230236833, Operation Gerrera.
Fran Collins, CEO of Red Funnel, said: “All of us at Red Funnel are shocked and saddened by the passing of our colleague on Thursday morning. We are doing all we can to support the family at this sad time.
“I am proud of my Red Funnel colleagues, who responded compassionately and professionally throughout what was an incredibly emotional day. We ask for respect of the privacy of the family during their sadness, and for the feelings of our team, who have lost a colleague and friend.”
