Tories vote for a new leader who can’t wait to stand down

The Conservative group at County Hall has elected Cllr Clare Mosdell, who represents Newchurch, Havenstreet & Ashey, as their new leader.

The leadership vacancy arose after Cllr Susie Ellis resigned after she failed in a bid to become council leader. Cllr Mosdell is the group’s third leader in four months. She has repeatedly told her group that she intends not to stand at the next election, even updating them on how many days remain until she will no longer be a councillor.

Leader of the IW Council, Phil Jordan, said the Conservatives and the Empowering Islanders (EI) group had already confirmed they will not be taking part in new cross-party working arrangements. The new provisions were put in place after political parties turned down cabinet roles.

Cllr Jordan said: “It is a matter of real regret to me that, despite saying that they wanted to work on a cross-party basis, the Conservatives and EI have refused to take part in the cabinet support teams.

“Members of other parties are enthusiastic about the idea and have agreed to contribute and work together for the good of the Island; indeed some have already started that work.”
