The remarkable story of 97 High Street

For many Islanders, 97 High Street in Ryde was once more than just a building; it was a vibrant youth club – a hub of community life where generations found laughter, friendship, and a sense of belonging. However, after years of service, the building fell into disrepair and was eventually closed, becoming a symbol of decay. It was a gathering spot for the homeless and a site for antisocial behaviour, including drug use and heavy drinking. For those who remembered the club’s lively past, the building’s decline was a painful reminder of what had been lost.

Visionaries see a future for the building

Thankfully, the story of 97 High Street didn’t end there. Enter Dr Darko Ilioski, a talented dentist who studied implantology at Cambridge and his wife, Dr Mika, a highly qualified and respected Member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society who graduated from the same university. Originally from Macedonia, the two visionaries were captivated by the building’s history and potential. They decided it was time to restore this once much-loved space and set about the monumental task of reviving it.

The ground floor is transformed

Their efforts started with the ground floor, transforming it from a damp, dilapidated area into a beautiful, wonder-filled haven for young children. Driven by a personal quest to find the perfect environment for their own young children, Emily and Luka, Dr Mika devoted herself to creating a children’s nursery. As a pharmacist, mother, and visionary, she poured her heart into what is now known as the Wonder House, a place filled with love, care, happiness, and endless fun. In January 2022, the Wonder House officially opened its doors, breathing new life back into 97 High Street. The building now resonates with the laughter and joy of children, creating new memories for the next generation.

Plans for the top floor?

But while the ground floor of 97 High Street was revitalized, the top floor remained a mystery, even to the couple. Despite numerous inducements to rent, sell, or hand over the space, they felt a deep obligation to create something just as special as the Wonder House below. The top floor also deserved a purpose that would honour the building’s history and contribute meaningfully to the community.

With a clear vision and unwavering determination, Dr. Ilioski decided to create something extraordinary on the top floor. As a highly respected dentist who has served the Isle of Wight for over 15 years, he envisioned a dental practice that would reflect his values – a place where patients are truly appreciated, welcomed, and given the time and attention they deserve. The newly-opened dental clinic boasts the very latest equipment, uses top quality materials and patients are at the heart of every decision.

The iconic building is reborn

The birth of Wight Clinic has marked a new era for 97 High Street. Dr Ilioski and Dr Mika have not only saved a building but also restored a piece of Ryde’s heart, making it a place the community can once again be proud of.

For Islanders this iconic building now stands as a symbol of rebirth and the endless possibilities that come with it. Whether you’re a parent looking for a nurturing environment for your child or someone in need of expert and attentive dental care, 97 High Street has re-opened its doors with a promise of excellence and care.

Join Dr Ilioski and Dr Mika in celebrating this incredible transformation and become part of the new chapter in the story of 97 High Street.
