The Island pays tribute

This weekend the Island will be paying tribute to those who serve or have served in the armed forces.

Some Remembrance events this weekend:

Newport: Newport Minster on Sunday at 10.50am with wreaths laid, including by the Lord-Lieutenant, Susie Sheldon. There will be a parade of uniformed organisations and veterans marching to St Thomas’s Square with the Lord-Lieutenant taking the salute.

Arreton – Act of Remembrance held at the village war memorial at 11am (gather by 10.45am), followed by a service at St George’s Church.

Binstead – A two-minute silence at the war memorial at the top of Binstead Hill at 11am, followed by a service.

Brighstone – Remembrance Sunday parade led by Medina Marching Band at 10.30am. Act of Remembrance, at 11am with a service held in the village.

Cowes – A parade at 10.40am from Northwood Park coach park to the war memorial in the park ark. Remembrance service and wreath laying at 10.50am, followed by a service at St Mary the Virgin Church.

East Cowes – Act of Remembrance at the war memorial, followed by a service at St James Church. Please gather be 10.50am.

Freshwater – Act of Remembrance at the war memorial at All Saints’ Church at 11am followed by a church service. Attendees are asked to gather there at 10.30am.

Gurnard – Refreshments from 9.30am at All Saint’s Church with a service at 10am followed by wreath laying. A bugler will play the Last Post.

Lake – Act of Remembrance, with wreath laying, will be held at the war memorial at 2.30pm with Rev John Izzard conducting.

Newchurch – Remembrance service will be held at 10am followed by wreath laying at the war memorial.

Ryde – A parade will march from Station Street at 9.30am with Remembrance Sunday service at All Saints’ Church at 10am. Act of Remembrance and wreath laying at Ryde War Memorial at the Town Hall, at 10.45am. Uniform groups, veterans and community groups are encouraged to join the parade.

Sandown – Remembrance Sunday service at the Esplanade war memorial at 11am, please arrive by 10.45am. Followed by a wreath-laying ceremony and hymns.

Shanklin – A service will be held at the war memorial in the Old Village at 11am, followed by wreath laying and hymns accompanied by Shanklin Town Brass Band.

Ventor – There will be a Remembrance service at the Royal British Legion Social Club tomorrow at 10.45am for Armistice Day. Service of Remembrance will be held at St Catherine’s Church at 2pm with wreath laying at the Park Avenue war memorial at 3pm. There will also be a Service of Remembrance in St Alban’s at 9.15am.

Wroxall – Act of Remembrance will be held at the village war memorial at 11am tomorrow, Armistice Day. On Sunday, a Remembrance Day service will be held at St John the Evangelist Church at 10am, followed by wreath laying at the war memorial at 11am.
