Stars in Their Eyes raises charity funds

A Stars in Their Eyes-style entertainment show has raised further funds for Island charities, following a successful night at the Riverside Centre, in Newport.

The event, held in early November, raised money for Carers IW, a charity supporting unpaid volunteer carers across the Isle of Wight. The evening was inspired by the popular 1980s television programme, and featured local contestants transforming into well-known musical icons.

This year’s show built on the success of the previous two events, and was organised and hosted by Anthony Crompton, a performer originally from Wigan who now lives on the Isle of Wight. Anthony has a long history of hosting charity events, and created the show to bring the community together in support of good causes.

Speaking after the event, he said the level of support had been overwhelming and praised the production team, noting that everyone involved gave their time freely. He said the professionalism of the lighting and sound made the event possible.

Performers spent six weeks rehearsing to portray their chosen stars. All were first-time contestants with limited performance experience, taking on roles inspired by artists including Dolly Parton, Eddie Reader, Kate Bush, Tim Curry, Johnny Cash, George Michael, Bobby Darin, Lady Gaga, and Luciano Pavarotti, who was portrayed by the overall winner.

The evening was co-hosted by Anthony and local singer, Sarah Morris.

Carers IW has since received a cheque for £1,970 from the event.
