STAR LETTER: Traffic madness terrorises businesses

Dear Editor,

For four days Newport to Cowes traffic has been diverted via Whitehouse Road and Pallance Road. The resulting chaos could extend for another seven weeks in the busiest part of the year, although miraculously the work can be cleared away to ensure the Isle of Wight Festival is not inconvenienced. What a pity that the same consideration was not given to our own home-grown businesses.

Meanwhile councillors have been able to do nothing to alleviate the problems.

Council officers were involved but had no power to stop Island Roads and Captiva Builders doing a deal.

Could members of the council stepped in and deferred the work, at least to have found out what the public would have preferred.

But perhaps they take the view that building even more houses on greenfield sites is so urgent that a delay of a few months is simply unacceptable, whatever the price that residents and businesses have to pay.
