The Wight Mouse Inn has paid tribute to Tony Russell, who was known as Mr Mouse, and who had worked there for 48 years, following his sudden death, on Monday, aged 61.
Tony was a familiar face to locals and visitors to Chale, and publicans, Andy and Cheryl Greenwood, said: “We’re all reeling here following the news of Tony’s unexpected death. We, like many, have never experienced the Wight Mouse without him as the welcoming, smiley face of the business.
“He oversaw many changes at the pub since joining as a teenager in 1978 and has been the forever constant.
“His popularity made him a true legend, and he will be missed immeasurably by customers and colleagues alike. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.”
IW Observer columnist, David Holmes, has been visiting the pub for 40 years, and said: “I remember Tony from when John ‘Brad’ and Jean Bradshaw bought it and made it the go to pub on the Island.
“My sister, Jackie, has a learning disability. She loved seeing Tony on her regular visits. He always remembered her name and was endlessly patient with her. He was incredibly kind, a perfect fit for that job. He’ll be missed.”
