Shanklin opener Jim Thorn on way to half-century againts Ventnor

With fixtures affected by the IW Festival, Ryde’s Kerry Rice settled early nerves to secure a well-deserved win, with solid bowling performances from Ventnor’s Sam Read, as well as Ryde’s Ben Gregory and Ash Goldsmith.

Hampshire and Premier Leagues

Division One’s Ryde won by 18 runs in a close encounter at Harding Shute against Bramshaw. Batting first, the Islanders lost opener, Dan Attrill, without troubling the scorers, with Kerry Rice making 56, and middle order Jack Summers also hitting 56, as they were bowled out for 196 in the 41st over.

Bramshaw’s response was constrained by the bowling of Gregory (3-35) and Goldsmith (3-36), with Julion Jayerajah taking 2 more, including the final wicket with the visitors reaching 178 all out in the 43rd over.

In Division Three, Ventnor II XI beat visitors, Emsworth, by 5 wickets, with Emsworth batting first to score 195 all out in the 41st over, with opening bowler, Sam Read, taking 4-40, and Kayton Evans 2-22.

Ventnor’s opening pair of Mark Fletcher (27) and Ash Brett (31) enjoyed a 50-run partnership, enabling middle-order batters, Tom Stafford (47 not out), Toby Noyes (24) and Gary Legg (21), combining to reach 199-5 in the 41st over, and take 24 points.

In Division Four, Ryde II lost by 3 wickets away at Portsmouth & Southsea. With the Island side asked to bat first, Harry Everard top scored with 33, with skipper/wickie, Geoff Kite, adding 26 and Mark Tuckwell 23, to reach 145 all out in the 42nd over.

Portsmouth reached their target in the 43rd over for the loss of 7 wickets, with Tuckwell taking 2-22.

In Southern Premier One, Ventnor lost by 159 runs away at Hook & Newnham, with Ventnor’s bowlers unable to break a series of solid partnerships. Hugh Calloway took 2-38, with a wicket each for Ollie Morgan, George Watts, Dan Cox, Dineth Thimodya and Charlie Calloway, as the home side reached 275-8 off 50 overs.

In reply, the Islanders struggled to score fluently, with opener, Sam Guerin, scoring 21, and middle order, Charlie Calloway, adding 23, as Ventnor were all out for 116 with 18 overs left.

Island League

In Division Two, Ventnor IV beat Shanklin III by 5 wickets. Batting first, Shanklin & Godshill lost opener, Matt Lambourne, to a Jess Glover catch at mid-off from Toby Morgan’s bowling. Shanklin opener, Jim Thorn, scored a solid 51, with Steve Priddle adding 30, as the Westhill side reached 126-7 off 35 overs, and Aston Langdon took 3-4 for Ventnor.

In reply, Ventnor were struggling at 76-5, but an unbeaten partnership between Glover (21 not out) and Nick Dobson (34 not out) to reach 127-5 in the 27th over to take the points.


Ventnor welcome Totton & Eling, Ryde travel to Burridge, Division Three leaders, Shanklin, are away at Emsworth, with Ventnor visiting Totton & Eling. Ryde II are at home to Challengers of Gosport.

On the Island, Newport host St Helen’s, Northwood entertain Ventnor, and Shanklin & Godshill II are at home to Freshwater. In Division Two, Shanklin & Godshill III are at home to Newport II and Ventnor IV welcome Northwood II.
