A dog rescued after being used repeatedly for breeding is now enjoying a new life thanks to the care of staff at an Island animal charity.
Nellie was surrendered to the charity last month after being kept in a shed and used “again and again for profit”.
When she arrived, staff said her nails were long and she was suffering pain caused by an impacted bowel and heavy discharge. Her ears also needed treatment, and when she was later spayed it became clear from the condition of her womb that she had had many puppies.
The charity said Nellie appeared completely shut down when she first arrived, with a haunted look in her eyes.
Staff member Jill and her husband Dave took Nellie into their home, where she has slowly begun to come out of her shell.
She is now said to wag her tail constantly and is enjoying life, possibly for the first time. She has also settled in alongside four other dogs, which have accepted her.
The charity said Nellie now has a far brighter future ahead, but her treatment has come at a cost.
So far, vet bills and ongoing care have totalled £1,786.23.
A spokesman said the charity was asking for donations to help cover Nellie’s care and support other animals in similar situations.
Donations can be made by calling 522511 from Tuesday to Friday, 10am to 5pm, and Saturday, 10am to 4pm, or by visiting the charity’s office in Pyle Street, Newport, which is part of its charity shop.
