Protest at Yarmouth Harbour over high ferry fares

A boisterous demonstration against Wightlink ferry prices took place at Yarmouth Harbour on Saturday morning.

The protest was organised by Stuart Blackburn, West Wight co-ordinator of the Wightlink Users Group (WUG), and attended by parliamentary candidates Cameron Palin (Green), Richard Quigley (Labour) and Bob Seely (Conservative) along with Chris Jarman, IW Councillor for Totland.

Around 40 people, with banners and placards, made their displeasure at the company known by chanting ‘Fairer Fares’.

Speaking on a loudspeaker, WUG representative, Nigel Talbot, said: “We’re here because we want fairer fares; we don’t get a fair service from the ferries.

“Wightlink is not interested in looking after its customers, only looking after their shareholders. We’re fed up with the service we are getting. Islanders need to get to the mainland for college, hospital appointments, and to see our families, but Wightlink is stopping us from doing that with their prices.

“We’re supported by all political parties even though it’s not a political matter.”

Mr Talbot added: “We have no problem with the hard-working staff, our only problem is with the owners.”

Protesters then gave three cheers for the staff in a show of support.

Other West Wight parliamentary candidates are: Ian Pickering (Reform) and Nick Stuart (Lib Dems).
