’Port’s prolific Pease and Payne plunder pacemen in this week’s cricket

Newport first and second team players, Louis Payne and Olly Pease, scored memorable centuries, Shanklin’s Nathan Moore grabbed 4 wickets, and Ventnor 1st XI’s win moves them to 5th place in the Premier league.

Premier & Hampshire Leagues

Southern Premier side Ventnor, secured an emphatic 8-wicket victory at home to Old Tauntonians & Romsey. The visitors were all out for 71 in the 28th over with 3 wickets apiece for Dineth Thimodya and Zach Wells. In reply, despite losing opener/skipper, Ben Woodhouse, for a duck, Thimodya scored an unbeaten 55 as the Islanders scored 72-2 in the 13th over, to claim the points and move to 5th place.

In Hampshire, Division One, Ryde lost by 4 wickets away at Hythe & Dibden. The Islanders were all out for 126 in the 40th over, with Andy Day scoring 31 and George Griffith 25. The mainlanders lost wickets at regular intervals, with Nathan Day and Kerry Rice taking 2 wickets each, but despite losing 6 wickets Hythe reached their target in the 40th over.

Division Three leaders Ventnor II, lost by 2 wickets away at Old Tauntonians II. Batting first the Islanders were all out in the 45th over, for 184 after a 68-run opening partnership between Ben Attrill (37) and Mark Fletcher (35) was not maintained. In reply the home side reached their target with the loss of 8 wickets, in the 45th over, despite Kayton Evans taking 3-28.

Third-placed Shanklin & Godshill won by 8 wickets away at Sway, who were bowled out for 93 in the 35th over, with Nathan Moore taking 4-25 and Ben White 3-15. In reply opener Matt Lambourne’s 37 not out helped the Islanders reach 94-2 in the 15th over and claim the points.

Division Four’s Ryde II lost by 6 wickets at home to Langley Manor. After losing opener Mark Oatley for a duck, the Island side rallied with Jerin Jose unbeaten on 32. Ian Hailes (23) and skipper Geoff Kite (20), helping set a target of 171 all out. In reply Jerin Jose’s 2 wickets weren’t enough to prevent the visitors score 173-4 in the 39th over for victory.

Island league and cups

Newport won by 145 runs at Westhill in the Senior Cup, with Louis Payne hitting an unbeaten 100, and Tom Dye 54 to set a target of 254-6 off their 40 overs. In reply, veteran Andy White’s unbeaten 50 contributed to Shanklin & Godshill reaching 109-9 with Aaron Hartup taking 3-27.

Ventnor III won by 58 runs away at Freshwater, with skippers Brett Hassett hitting 83 and Charlie Turpin 59 as the visitors were all out for 208, with Steve Holbrook returning figures of 3-45. In reply, Freshwater opener, Graham Gosden, contributed 31 to a total of 150 all out, with Brett Hassett taking 4-6.

Newport won by 145 runs away at Shanklin & Godshill II, with mid-order Louis Payne striking an unbeaten 100, with Tom Dye adding 54, and Andy White taking 2-48. In reply, the Westhill side saw veteran White scoring an unbeaten 50, and opener, Jordan Langdon, an impressive 31. However Aaron Hartup’s 3-27 led a bowling attack that saw Shanklin finish their 40 overs with 109-9.

In the Fred Winter Cup, Northwood won a nail-biting encounter at Ventnor IV by 4 runs, after scoring 178-8 including 42 from Liam Roberts, and 2 wickets apiece for Steve Borman, Nick Dobson and George Charlesworth. Ventnor’s run chase as they replied was led by seasoned opener, Mark Price, with 65 not out, but he ran out of partners. Ventnor were all out for 174, with an over left with 3 wickets each for Steve Lewis and Liam Roberts.

In Division Two Newport II XI won by 155 runs home to Shanklin III, with opener, Olly Pease, unbeaten on 110 and skipper, Steve Steinmetz, on 76 not out, as ’Port reached 247-2. Shanklin’s reply reached 92 all out, with 2 wickets each for Ellis Hinckley and Brad Salmon.

In the U-13 League Arreton won by 15 runs at home to Cowes, with the Eagles scoring 132-3 off 20 overs, and Cowes limited to 117-6.

Fixtures

This weekend, Ventnor visit Andover, Ryde welcome Portsmouth, Ventnor II play Verwood and Shanklin & Godshill host Old Tauntonians & Romsey, and Ryde II are away to Portsmouth III. On the Island, in Division One Freshwater welcome Shanklin & Godshill II, St Helens host Newport, and Ventnor III play Northwood. Newport II are home to Ventnor IV and Northwood II play host to Shanklin & Godshill II in Division Two.
