’Port’s prime positions in cricket this week

Newport on the way to 325

With rain causing several fixtures, including Ryde and Ventnor, to be cancelled, a century for Northwood’s Liam Roberts was the highlight of the day, when Newport teams top the Island’s Divisions One and Two.

Hampshire League
Division Three leaders, Shanklin & Godshill, secured 6 points in their 3 wicket defeat away at Locks Heath. Batting first the Islanders scored 138 all out, with Mark Ringer top scoring with 36, and wickie, Sean Phillips, adding 17. Shanklin struck early and Locks Heath were struggling at 68-6, but recovered to win in the 36th over, scoring 139-7, with Shanklin’s Ben White taking 3-31 and Tommy Quaife 2-34.

Island Leagues
Division One leaders, Newport, overcame Ventnor III by 175 runs, after scoring 325-4 from 40 overs, with opener, Ash Brett, hitting 65, Grant Richardson adding 53, and Tom Dye an unbeaten 65. Newport’s bowling attack was led by Max Poynter, who took 3-20, with Ventnor opener, Nithin Jose Sunhil, hitting 52 from a reply of 150 all out.

Division Two leaders, Newport II, beat Ventnor IV by 16 runs in a close match at Newclose, scoring 169-4 off 35 overs. Skipper, Steven Steinmetz, scored 63 not out, and wickie, Finn Woodford, 30 not out, combining to help set the target, with Ventnor bowler, Herbie Conway-Hughes, taking 2-13. In reply, Ventnor opener, Nathaniel Wells, scored 42 and, despite a middle-order knock of 25 from Nick Dobson, Ventnor were all on with 2 balls left, with Newport’s Paul Attrill taking 4-27.

Northwood II XI beat Shanklin & Godshill III XI by 211 runs, with openers, Martyn Richards hitting 73 and Jeff Barrett 51.

Player-of-the-match, Liam Roberts, scored an unbeaten hundred, as Northwood reached 267-2 off 35 overs. In reply Shanklin were limited to 56 all out, with 2 wickets apiece for Harry Cooksey, Liam Goldsmith, Neil Redmond and Richard Herbing-Smith.

Fixtures
With IW Festival weekend on the Island, there are only a few fixtures, mostly mid-week, but Shanklin & Godshill III home to Ventnor IV tomorrow (Saturday). Ventnor II are home to Emsworth in Division Three South, and Ryde II away at Portsmouth & Southsea in Division Four South.
