PODCAST: Russell ‘What’s-On’ at Ryde All Saints

The ‘People’s Tenor’, Russell Watson, took some time out to give the IW Observer an exclusive interview ahead of his return visit to the Island next month.

Russell is performing in All Saints Church, Ryde, on Thursday, November 28, which, he teased, may include some Christmas classics.

During the interview, now available as a podcast, Russell describes the early family influences on his career, including his late grandmother and how she kept him grounded, his roots growing up near Salford, his job on a factory production line, and touring local clubs as an up-and-coming singer in the evenings.

Russell’s frank and family-friendly comments cover his friendship with Aled Jones which culminated in a Christmas album, his collaboration with pianist Helen Jane Long and his appearances in musicals such as Chicago and The War of The Worlds.

In his broad Lancastrian accent, Russell reflected on the impact that two brain tumours, in 2005 and 2006, had on his life and the values, and priorities, that he has.

Appearances on ‘I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here’, and other TV shows and why he didn’t take up the challenge of ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ are discussed, as well as the opportunities, and challenges, that young people face when entering the show-business industry.

Sharing some personal memories, Russell recounted anecdotes about his work on cruise ships, and how he once broke into Pompeii accompanied by his long-standing friend, Island entertainer and magician, Chris Cox.

The podcast gives a rare insight into the charisma and character of an artist, in many ways an unexpected superstar who more than merits his reputation as the People’s Tenor.

Tickets to the concert at Ryde All Saints where Russell will be accompanied by Mike Moran which will also include special guests, The Phoenix Choir, are available from HERE.
