| In one of the biggest town-centre events in recent years Newport will be transformed for a day to mark the jubilee with a host of free activities and sights. The Grand Parade starts at 3pm from Recreation Ground Road and makes its way down to Newport Quay.
With an Island-wide range of participants already, there are still places available. Local businesses, carnival associations, musicians and other outdoor display organisations are invited to get in touch and join the parade. In St James’ Square there will be a big screen showing jubilee broadcasts throughout the day, alongside live performances from Platform One from 11am until 6pm. The market in St Thomas Square will be open from 9am, with local producers, artisans and businesses offering plenty to buy and enjoy. Lower High Street and St James’ Square will have entertainment and performers in the street all day, so the roads will be closed to vehicles – but very much open to pedestrians. Upper High Street will also be closed during the parade. Cllr Julie Jones-Evans, the Isle of Wight Council’s cabinet member for regeneration, said: “It’s a great show of partnership working to show what we can do for this once-in-a-lifetime event. “I’m looking forward to seeing our town at its best, to welcome people from across the Island to enjoy this very special royal day – and of course have some fun!” The event is managed by Shaping Newport, and supported by by Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council, Market Days CIC, Newport Business Association, Isle of Wight Council, Newport High Street Heritage Action Zone, Platform One and the National Lottery Community Fund.
