A Newport woman has been honoured for the second time by the British Heart Foundation, this time for her cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training in the community.
Dana Edkins-Wherry has been named a CPR Hero, performing the life-saving technique, which involves chest compression and rescue breaths, for the last seven years, visiting schools, colleges and a variety of community clubs.
Dana was crowned a ‘Heart Hero’ by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) in 2016, following her fund-raising challenge, to travel as far as possible, in four days, without any food or money. The challenge came about after Dana discovered that she has a rare genetic heart condition and was in the early stages of heart failure.
Talking about the award, Dana said: “I had a bad dose of flu at the beginning of the year and I received the medal and certificate just last week so it was a really pleasant surprise and gave me a lift.
“When I won the award in 2016, I had to travel to London, so this has saved me a bit of a trek!
“I’m available in any school or clubs would like to learn free CPR, the more people who know the better, it may help to save a life.”
