For more than a decade, Newport Youth Café has been a vital space for young people in the community, providing a welcoming drop-in environment where they can relax, have fun, and seek support when needed. Operated by Revive Newport, a church-based charity dedicated to outreach, the café focuses on helping young people who may be struggling with life’s challenges.
The café has been actively engaging with local youth since 2009. Over the years, it has grown into a key hub for young people, offering youth work three times a week and drop-in sessions twice a week. With an open-access policy, the café runs for 48 weeks a year, ensuring a consistent and reliable presence in Newport.
They also carry out ‘detached’ youth work, where the team go out and about to various areas in Newport town centre two to three times a week, engaging with and having conversations with young people.
During these times they have positive conversations about relevant issues that face these young people.
Each year, around 1,000 young people connect with the charity’s work, with approximately 200 regularly attending
the café. On a typical night, more than 40 young people walk through the doors, drawn by the welcoming atmosphere and range of activities, including pool tables, air hockey, and games consoles. Located in the Revive Community Hub on the High Street, it serves as both an escape and a place where young people can talk about their problems, seek advice, or be signposted to further support.
Despite its impact, the café operates with a small but dedicated team – just three part-time youth workers and a group of volunteers. The demand for youth support is growing, and the team recognises the need to expand. services and secure more funding over the next few years to reach even more young people.
“Our focus is helping young people who feel lonely and isolated, who are at risk of being involved in anti- social behaviour, criminality, struggle educationally, or those who just need a bit of help,” explained youth worker, Peter Luther.
