New Shanklin eatery champions Island produce and healthy food

Shanklin mayor, Sara Sheath, cut the ribbon to officially open Eat Wight – Sandwich & Spud Bar, on Falcon Cross Road. The new venture champions locally-sourced produce, working closely with Island farmers, and committing to non–ultra‑processed food.

Proprietor and army veteran, Kelly Way, has spent the spring developing the business with the help of family and friends. She recognised the need for a welcoming space that supports healthier choices and celebrates quality Island ingredients.

Kelly said: “I am passionate about supporting the community in which I live, and Eat Wight is very much about harnessing the quality foods produced on the Island, ensuring ‘Good Mood Food’ is available for residents and visitors to enjoy.”

First through the door was Sandown resident, Patricia Baker, who has recently lost 7½ stone after watching What Not To Eat on TV. She said: “The team are great and the menu is full of quality products at affordable prices.”

Another early visitor posted: “We had a couple of potatoes – really nice! The chilli was lovely and great quality food. Appreciated the bit of salad as well. Good price for local food prepared well. Definitely will be back again and will recommend to others too.”

Eat Wight’s “John Knox Spuds” are packed with nutritional value, topped with butter from Briddlesford Farm, eggs from Hazlegrove Farm, tomato sauces from Isle of Wight tomatoes. East Wight also uses local bread and the window display features Island crafts.

Kelly added: “With the road being closed for some time, we couldn’t have opened on schedule without the efforts of a number of local businesses, which is very much at the heart of Eat Wight.”
