More conservation space for squirrels

The Isle of Wight Red Squirrel Trust has expanded its conservation work with the purchase of an additional area of woodland, creating a larger continuous habitat for one of the Island’s most vulnerable native species.

The newly-acquired site sits alongside the Trust’s existing woodland, Howe’s Wood, effectively doubling the protected area available for red squirrels and other wildlife. The purchase was made possible through donations and legacies left to the charity, which relies on community support to secure and restore suitable habitat.

The land, currently wild and unmanaged, contains fallen and standing deadwood, dense undergrowth and no formal paths. Volunteers visit every Sunday to begin the slow process of clearing debris, installing feeders, building a hide, and preparing the ground for long‑term habitat improvement.

The charity’s founder, Helen Butler, has been documenting the transformation as work progresses. She said: “We are so grateful for every donation and legacy that makes our work possible. By joining these two woodlands, we’re not just expanding space, we’re creating a safer, richer environment where red squirrels can thrive.” The sanctuary is not regularly open to the public.
