Whilst the Isle of Wight Observer published on 25th December, 1869 was a paid for title, we follow its noble tradition of being the newspaper of choice for all the “best circles” on the Isle of Wight.
PROPOSED ENLARGEMENT OF THE “ISLE OF WIGHT OBSERVER.”
It has long been the wish of the Proprietors of this Journal – the Oldest Local Paper in the Island, having been established over 17 years – to meet the requirements of the Public by a PERMANENT ENLARGEMENT. An important alteration will, therefore, take place from end of the first week in January, 1870, when it will be increased from twenty-four to FORTY-EIGHT COLUMNS. At no period of its history has the OBSERVER stood in better favour than at the present moment, so that we have no occasion to complain of want of Patronage wither in the ranks of the best circles in this and the surrounding towns or those of the trading classes generally, inasmuch as our Circulation is constantly increasing; while we have unfortunately been so crippled for want of space for ADVERTISEMENTS which might have been inserted in these columns have frequently been refused. In making this change, then, we do but accede to the wish of many friends who have repeatedly offered us their Advertisements provided we could insert them in DOUBLE COLUMN, which the proposed alteration will enable us to do; while it will at the same time enable us to give fuller Reports of the passing events of each week, instead of their being so condensed as hitherto. An enlarged circulation, therefore, with the natural results – an increase in Advertisements – we confidently look for. No labour or expense will be spared in order to render the publication in all respect acceptable to the general reader, and worthy of the patronage of all classes of Advertisers, who will find it a cheap and ready means of circulating widely their respective announcements.
In making this announcement, we take the opportunity of thanking our many friends for the long and extensive patronage hitherto accorded, and which we need hardly add will be more than appreciated.
