Lord-Lieutenant, Susie Sheldon, and Jeanne Jones have launched a new literacy initiative to support primary school children on the Island during the National Year of Reading 2026.
The scheme brings together town and parish councils to fund and provide book bags for pupils at selected Island primary schools.
The initiative aims to support children’s reading at home, protect school-books, and help ease costs for families, while also promoting equal access to learning resources.
Reading is seen as an important life skill which helps build confidence, well-being, and educational achievement. With 2026 designated nationally as the Year of Reading, the project offers councils a practical way to support schools and encourage stronger community involvement in literacy.
Town and parish councils have played a key role in funding the book bags for participating schools, helping to ensure pupils can benefit regardless of family circumstance.
Mrs Sheldon said: “This initiative embodies what the Year of Reading is all about and is dear to my heart — encouraging a love of books, supporting our schools, and bringing communities together.”
Jeanne Jones added: “Book bags may seem like a small item, but they make a significant difference. They help create a positive routine around reading, strengthen home-school connections, and give every child the same opportunity to enjoy books.”
