Learn the full story behind bear rescue

Benji and Balu

The Wildheart Animal Sanctuary is inviting supporters and wildlife lovers to a special fund-raising evening, marking six months since the arrival of its rescued brown bear brothers, Benji and Balu.

The event, to be held at Medina Theatre on Friday, November 28, will offer a behind-the-scenes look at the bears’ dramatic journey from captivity in Azerbaijan to their new home on the Isle of Wight. CEO Lawrence Bates, and animal manager, Marc Fox, will share the full story of the rescue – from the harsh conditions the bears endured as ‘restaurant bears’ kept in cages for entertainment, to the complex logistics of their eight-hour flight to the UK.

Benji and Balu’s story captured national attention following their appearance on BBC’s The One Show in August. This event promises to go deeper, revealing the emotional first meeting, the challenges faced by the rescue team, and the Sanctuary’s decision to take on its first bear rescue.

“This event is about more than just two bears,” said Lawrence. “It’s about hope, change, and what we can achieve when we stand up against animal exploitation. Benji and Balu represent a brighter future for animals everywhere.”

Guests will also learn more about the Sanctuary’s wider mission to provide safe, natural environments for rescued animals – and how public support makes that work possible.

The event runs from 7.30pm to 9.30pm, with doors opening at 7pm. Tickets cost £21.50, including booking fee, and are available via iw.observer/benji-and-balu.
