July’s Island Theatre with Maureen Sullivan

It’s almost July – summer must start soon but, in any case, there’s plenty of great theatre to look forward to!

First, there’s ‘High School Musical Jr’ at The Bay School’s secondary site, in Sandown, on July 4 and 5 at 6.30pm. Packed with high-energy dance numbers and catchy songs, it’s sure to make you ‘Bop to the top!’ To secure your tickets, email highschoolmusicaljr@bayceschool.org

The acclaimed Island-written youth musical, ‘Smile’, returns on July 5 and 6 at Niton Village Hall.

April’s review of the show said: “This is a fascinating story… based around the life of the famous entertainer, Charlie Chaplin, and a familial connection to the production team.  It is this story, with the atmosphere of the streets of Lambeth, and the early musical hall era at its heart, that enables a new talented company of young performers to shine.” Tickets via Paypal at thenitonplaybox@aol.com

The next play to be staged at the Apollo Theatre is ‘Around the World in 80 Days’ from July 12 to 20. A band of travelling performers embark on their most daring feat yet: to recreate the adventures of Phileas Fogg as he sets off on his race around the world. Jules Verne’s classic tale is adapted by Laura Eason. Tickets from iw.observer/apollo-theatre.

The acclaimed WightStrollers are back with the well-known musical ‘Sweet Charity’ at Medina Theatre from July 12 to 14 . A funny, feel-good musical, packed with well-known songs, like ‘Big Spender’, ‘If My Friends Could See Me Now’, and ‘Rhythm Of Life’, it boasts a live 9-piece band, colourful costumes, a striking set, and an exceptional cast. Tickets from

Finally, Theatretrain Isle of Wight invites audiences to Shanklin Theatre from July 13 to 16 for ‘We Will Rock You Young@Part.’

This electrifying production will showcase the immense talent of Theatretrain’s older students, aged 9-18 years, as they take on the iconic music of Queen.

Featuring the legendary hits that have made Queen a household name, this high-energy show is set to be an absolute show-stopper. Tickets from iw.observer/we-will-rock-you.

So much Island talent: see you next month for more!
