Three Isle of Wight volunteer groups have been awarded The King’s Award for Voluntary Service – the highest honour a UK voluntary group can receive, equivalent to an MBE.
The Apollo Theatre Players were recognised for their contribution to culture and the arts. Since rescuing their nineteenth-century Methodist chapel from demolition in 1969, the group has staged over 350 productions, welcoming around 4,000 visitors annually. With 220 members involved in acting, set building, maintenance, publicity and front-of-house roles, the group places strong emphasis on inclusion and youth engagement.
Brading Community Partnership received the award for its work with young people and the wider community. Based at the Youth & Community Centre, 62 volunteers support over 190 young people through Youth Clubs, Duke of Edinburgh Award groups and a Non-Contact Boxing club. The centre also runs vegetable growing schemes, outdoor activities on its meadow, and summer holiday clubs. Its Community Café opens twice weekly, and hosts a dozen adult groups and initiatives.
West Wight Dementia-Friendly Choir was honoured for its service to mental health and well-being. The choir supports those with dementia, and their carers through music, singing and friendship. Its outreach programme includes school visits, public education, concerts and fund-raising. The group has inspired the creation of a second choir in Parklands, Cowes, with a third launching at All Saints’ Church, Ryde in the New Year.
The Island winners are among just 232 groups nationally to receive the award this year. Representatives will be presented with their awards by His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant for the Isle of Wight, Susie Sheldon, later this year. Two volunteers from each group will also attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace, in May or June 2026.
Mrs Sheldon said: “I am delighted that the fantastic work of our volunteers has been recognised, and I am grateful for their tireless efforts. The high number of awards won on the Island year by year underlines our community’s commitment to serve others.”
