Islanders urged to boost skills with autumn courses

Islanders are being encouraged to boost their skills or explore new hobbies this autumn, through a new programme of courses and workshops from Adult Community Learning (ACL).

The scheme, aimed at adults aged 19 and over, offers a wide range of opportunities, from arts and crafts to health and well-being. For those looking to improve their qualifications, free courses in English, maths and ICT are also on offer.

Councillor Paul Brading, chairman of the IW council’s Children’s services, Education and Skills Committee, said, “Whether you’re looking to gain a qualification, try something creative, or simply meet new people, our autumn programme has something for everyone. We’re particularly proud to offer free online short courses across a wide range of subjects.”

You can see the range of courses and book on-line via iw.observer/acl-courses.

In addition, free one-to-one careers advice sessions are available with Claire Rixon, who can help residents identify skills, prepare CVs, complete job applications, and plan the next step in their career. Appointments are available on Fridays on September 19, October 17, November 14, and December 12.

Group workshops designed to build confidence and uncover hidden strengths will also take place this autumn, helping participants with training, job interviews and employment opportunities. Dates include Saturday, October 18 (10am–12noon) and Wednesday, November 19 (6.30pm–8.30pm). Email acl@iow.gov.uk or call 01983 817280 to book.
