On Friday, February 6, Independent Arts in Newport buzzed with words, music and conversation, as The Figlet celebrated the launch of its fifth issue. The Island’s home-grown literary magazine drew a packed crowd from across the Island, filling the venue with writers, artists and supporters, eager to mark the occasion.
The event featured readings from contributors alongside live music from Ric and Big Al, creating a spirited atmosphere. Now in its third year, The Figlet continues to thrive and Issue Five – themed “Friend and Foe” – showcases work from more than 60 writers and illustrators in poetry, prose, articles, artwork and comic strips.
Founder and editor, Jean G-Owen, paid tribute to Island creatives and the importance of supporting local publishing. “Evenings like this remind me just how much talent this Island holds,” she said.
She thanked host, Ralph Ridler, of Independent Arts, alongside contributors, supporters and stockists, and the Naked Figleaf Press team, including illustrator Karl Whitmore, Ross Glanfield, and new team member, Ellie Insley.
One contributor summed up the mood of the evening: “It was a fabulous night – The Figlet has a real magic about it, bringing people together and making creativity feel shared.”
The Figlet Issue Five is available from Island stockists, priced at £6.50, or on-line via Naked Figleaf Press at iw.observer/naked-figleaf.
