Many Islanders, and former pupils of Sandown High School from the 1970s and subsequently, will mourn the loss of John Endacott, who died on Monday at the age of 76.
A former art teacher at Sandown High School, John was also a veteran of Sandown & Shanklin Rugby Club and a popular team-mate at the numerous basketball clubs he represented, including the England national squad in the early 1970s. As one of the only foreign 1st team players at Neptune’s Water Polo Club, in Malta, in the ’60s, he raised the bar for others who followed.
However, most of all, he was an inspiration to his children, grandchildren and the many he touched with his distinctive wit and sardonic humour.
He was also inspirational for countless students over his 41-year teaching career, as well as sportsmen and women over the years, and will be much missed by his family and friends.
