Island Obituary – Alan Morgan

Alan Morgan, with Cliff Morgan and Dickie Davies

Alan Morgan, who died at home, at the age of 80, will be fondly remembered as the proprietor of Shanklin’s Glyn Morgan Newsagents.

Husband to Jenny, Alan was a proud father and grandfather, a former chairman of Shanklin Carnival, and actively involved in Shanklin Bowls Club. The funeral service will be held at Shanklin Methodist Church on Thursday, January 23, with donations to Shanklin Bowls Club welcomed.

Alan was interviewed for Shanklin Volume Two of Growing Up In The Bay four years ago, and recounted his meeting with Aneurin (Nye) Bevan, the founder of the NHS, in Shanklin in 1949. The film includes footage of Nye lifting a young Alan into the air, which made the front page of the Daily Mail. You can see Alan relive his memories of the meeting via iw.observer/growing-up-in-the-bay-2, with the clip starting at 1m 18s in.
