A fundraising art auction has been launched to support plans for a new skatepark and pump track in Freshwater.
Freshwater Parish Council has brought together local artists who have transformed blank skateboard decks into original artworks, which will be sold to help fund the project.
The decks will be displayed at an opening evening at Newport and Carisbrooke Community Centre on April 2 from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. An on-line auction will run from April 1 to May 9, with the public able to view and bid on the artworks at iw.observer/deck-auction.
The initiative combines art, community involvement and youth sport, while also recognising the Island’s skateboarding heritage. Historic locations including Shide Ramp and Golden Hill Skatepark will be highlighted as part of the exhibition.
The project has already received a £20,000 grant from The National Lottery Community Fund, bringing it closer to its funding target. Freshwater Parish Council hopes construction can begin within the next 12 months.
Parish council clerk, Kirsty Gibson, said the project was about more than fundraising. “It’s about bringing the community together, celebrating the Island’s skateboarding heritage, and creating a facility that everyone can enjoy,” she said.
Among the artists taking part are Angela Sowden, whose deck “Freshwater Bay” reflects the Island’s coastline, and Kye Watson, whose wildlife-themed design highlights local species.
