Freshwater causeway will soon be upgraded

Island Roads has confirmed that barriers which have been in place for three years at Freshwater Causeway will finally be removed by September.

An IW Observer reader contacted us this week to say: “This situation has been going on for far too long and local residents want it sorted; there seems to be an impasse somewhere by someone.”

Unstable safety railings have been awaiting replacement since 2019. However, an Island Roads spokesman has now confirmed: “The upgrade of the Causeway has been a complex project as we had to combine the need to ensure it is safe for all users with the need to preserve its unique character.

“We have also had to liaise with ecology experts given its environmentally-sensitive location.

“We are pleased that we have now completed the approvals process with the various stakeholders involved and we are now working further with ecology experts to finalise the scheme. We anticipate work will be completed by September.”
