A community picnic will be held in Newport next week to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week and highlight the importance of sustainable support for families.
The free event takes place at Victoria Recreation Ground on Tuesday, August 5, from 1pm to 3pm, and is being organised by the Isle of Wight Council in partnership with the Breastfeeding Network, Health Visiting and Maternity Services.
The theme for this year’s World Breastfeeding Week (August 1–7) is “Invest in breastfeeding, invest in the future”, which encourages communities to empower parents to breastfeed for as long as they choose, whether that’s for weeks, months or years.
The relaxed, family-friendly picnic is open to all and will include activities for young children, breastfeeding support on site, and information about local services. There will also be a raffle with prizes donated by members of the Island’s Breastfeeding Friendly Scheme.
Attendees are encouraged to bring their own blanket, food and drink. In the event of poor weather, the event will move indoors to The Pavilion.
Director of Public Health Simon Bryant said: “Breastfeeding is a personal journey, and our role as a community is to ensure every parent feels supported to continue for as long as they choose.”
The Island offers a wide range of infant feeding support including local services, the Breastfeeding Friendly Venues scheme, and 24/7 access to expert advice through the Anya app.
