A Ryde pub is making a remarkable gesture by offering a free lunch to anyone who walks through their door on Christmas Day.
The Veterans, on the Esplanade, is well known for giving free holidays to any former member of the Armed Forces who requires some rest and recuperation.
But they are going one step further on Christmas Day, with Dale Hillier, who also runs the Veterans’ Hub in Ryde High Street, saying: “We have had some meals donated already, and there will be a full meat buffet on from around lunchtime. We’ll be opening from around 10am, so anybody is welcome to come in; we don’t want to see anyone on their own at this time of year.
“We did the same last year, and there were people crying on my shoulder in gratitude at being able to have something to eat, and share the day with others.
“I really feel for people who are lonely at this time of year, so we are throwing open our door to anyone, not just veterans, we will make sure everyone is fed and have a good time.”
